While Da Vincis sfumato softened harsh lines by allowing tones and colors to shade gradually into each other (Figure 5); Buonarrotis hatching and crosshatching produced the chiaroscuro effect in a much bolder and aggressive way (Figure 6). Furthermore, Michelangelos colors were vibrant from the tempera, and bright and bold due to the oil flourishes, whereas Leonardos palette evoked a dark and mysterious atmosphere.
